It may be surprising how Kakashi was able to don a Sharingan, despite being in Hatake and not the Uchiha clan. You’ll witness this acquisition on Episode 120 (Kakashi Chronicles – Boys’ Life on the Battlefield – Part 2), which is part of a miniseries dedicated to retelling Kakashi’s tragic childhood. In this episode, Kakashi gets promoted to jōnin by the council. It’s also the day he turns 13, where both his teammates Rin Nohora and Minato Namikaze give him gifts (a medical kit and a Flying Thunder God Kunai, respectively) to celebrate his advancement, except for Obito Uchiha. Kakashi makes fun of Obito for forgetting and says the gift would’ve been useless.
However, Obito does eventually give Kakashi his birthday present later on in the story, but it’s not the way most would expect. Yes, you guessed it, Kakashi got his Sharingan from Obito on his 13th birthday as a farewell gift. More details on the juicy lore below.

The Story Behind Kakashi’s Sharingan
During a mission in the Third Great Shinobi War, Minato gave Kakashi the responsibility of leading the team while he goes on a solo mission. The team’s mission involved slowing down Iwagakure’s efforts in infiltrating Kusagakure near the Land of Fire, and to execute this Kakashi, Obito and Rin had to take down the Kannabi Bridge while Minato took charge of engaging in combat in the frontlines. Unfortunately, Kakashi’s team gets ambushed by two enemies from Iwa on their way to the bridge, and a hidden stone ninja takes away Rin.
Not wanting to repeat his father’s mistake, Kakashi abandons his comrades to resume the mission. But not before Obito reminds him that the White Fang is a true hero. This is because, in the previous episode, Minato reveals during a heart-to-heart conversation with Obito that Kakashi’s father was a legendary shinobi who gave up the mission to protect his comrades. The quote about how while “breaking the laws of shinobi is bad but leaving your friends behind is worse than scum” wasn’t first said by Kakashi, but Obito himself during the altercation between the two.
Although the two separate ways, Kakashi was deeply affected by the words Obito left him. This was even made worse by the fact that Rin always served as a medic whenever he was injured. Realizing how terrible of a person he was, Kakashi returns and fights alongside Obito. The origins of his scar begin here, while it was thought to be acquired through surgical procedure for his Sharingan eye, the scar was actually caused by a Rock ninja during their rescue mission. Kakashi loses his eye fighting this ninja and battles with one eye throughout.
Obito’s Farewell Gift
The Rock ninja then uses Earth Style to destroy the cave, Obito sacrifices himself by pushing Kakashi out of the way and gets half of his body crushed by a huge boulder. Dying, he decides to give Kakashi his 2 Tomoe Sharingan as a parting gift to replace his missing eye, with Rin carrying out the procedure to implant them. “Happy birthday, Kakashi! By the way, here’s my eye!”
However, this isn’t the only Sharingan eye Kakashi receives. Boy, is this a long story. Explaining how Kakashi gets his second one is very silly, and unfortunately he doesn’t get it for a long time, much to the fans’ dismay. Hundreds of episodes later, the Fourth Shinobi World War happens in Episode 473 (The Sharingan Revived). In a previous fight between Naruto, Sasuke, and Madara, Kakashi’s only Sharingan gets stolen by Madara. He steals Kakashi’s eye because he wants to travel into the Kamui dimension using Kamui (a space-time ninjutsu) in order to retrieve the other Rinnegan from Obito’s eye socket. In an attempt to revive the casualties of the war, Naruto gets half of the Six Paths Chakra and uses Yin Release to create another eye for Kakashi.
Now Obito, who turns out to have been rescued from the previous incident by Madara (who uses a white Zetsu Kashirama cell body to revive half of his destroyed body) team up with Team 7 against Madara and a princess named Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who is revived. Sometime around this, Obita takes Sakura into the Kamui Dimension and asks Sakura to destroy his Rinnegan in order to prevent Madara from stealing it. She fails to do so, and Madara gets it from him, but this also means that Obito finally had both of Mangekyou Sharingan.
Kaguya eventually corners Naruto and Sasuke, and just as she was about to strike them with bone spikes, Obito once again sacrifices himself by using his body as a shield and stops Kakashi from joining him by using Kamui to send the other spike away. Pierced by the bone spike, Obito dies and turns into ash.
After his death, Obito and Kakashi meet once again in another dimension where they are both children. This time, he gives Kakashi two celebratory gifts using his chakra: both his Magekyou Sharingan. This allows Kakashi to use various abilities such as Susanoo and a much better version of Kamui and gives him the ability to pass through objects and manipulate their shape to become shuriken.
When does Kakashi get his Mangekyou Sharingan?
First of all, a Mangekyou Sharingan can only be activated when the user loses a loved one. To speed up the process, we see the Uchiha murdering their closest friends. Second, it doesn’t just involve witnessing their deaths, but the user has to experience feelings of grief after losing someone dear to them. Sometime after the mission, Kakashi gets his Mangekyou Sharingan without realizing (or rather, refuses to ever use it). This occurs right on Episode 345 (I’m in Hell), where Rin sacrifices herself by running into Kakashi’s Chidori, or lightning blade. Of course, she doesn’t just commit suicide to accelerate Kakashi’s Sharingan, but to escape a curse that was set upon her by Madara Uchiha.
This curse, known as the Forbidden Individual Curse Tag, seals a tailed beast inside the victim. This beast was meant to be unleashed once Rin and Kakashi return to Konoha. Rin, having surmised this, begs Kakashi to kill her. Of course, he refuses to after he had promised Obito to protect her by all means. Not wanting to risk the village’s safety, she commits suicide by impaling herself with a lightning blade Kakashi used meant to attack a Kiri-nin. As she dies, she whispers Kakashi’s name and a tear falls down his one eye, activating his Mangekyou Sharingan. Kakashi however had no clue so he doesn’t use it until he eventually realizes that he had awoken it, as the Mangekyou Sharingan only opens after the user goes through severe trauma.
Did Kakashi lose his Sharingan and how did he lose it?
Kakashi loses his Sharingan twice in episodes 424 (To Rise Up) and 473 (The Sharingan Revived). In Episode 424, Madara prepares to attack Naruto and Sasuke, having the knowledge that he possessed both their powers. However, the two managed to evade his attacks. Realizing they discovered how his Limbo worked, Madara sacrifices it and escapes Naruto and Sasuke’s jutsu. But he doesn’t fly away without stealing Kakashi’s Sharingan. Madara gets cut in half by Sasuke, but because he now has the Sharingan, he uses it to teleport into the Kamui dimension. In that dimension, Sakura is about to destroy the Rinnegan as per Obito’s request. But she was too late, and Madara now owned two Rinnegans.
After Princess Kaguya kills Obito with a Bone Ash, Obito is reunited with his former teammate and crush, Rin Nohara. They’re both children again, and she reveals to him that she’s been watching over him in the afterlife. She takes his hand and is about to leave with him into the afterlife, but knowing that Kakashi still needed help, Obito asks her to wait a little longer. With the promise of returning to Rin, Obito uses Kamui to warp into the core dimension. Manifesting himself as chakra, he takes Kakashi and they also both reunite as children inside Kakashi’s consciousness. He tells Kakashi that he wants him to become the Sixth Hokage, and temporarily gives him a special gift to celebrate this future achievement. Going back to the real world, Kakashi opens his eyes and reveals a set of Mangekyou Sharingan eyes.
After the battle, Obito enters Kakashi’s inner psyche again and exchange goodbyes. Kakashi then loses both of his Sharingan, because they can only be reanimated through Obito’s Chakra. Obito then goes home to Rin in the afterlife, fulfilling his promise of being together with her someday. Although he no longer has his Sharingan, over the years he has memorized the 1000 jutsu that he has mastered over the years. Another thing was that because Kakashi previously couldn’t deactivate his Sharingan to preserve chakra, he is now able to have more chakra.
Does Kakashi ever get his Sharingan back?
Unfortunately, he never gets his Sharingan back after getting his physical one stolen by Madara, and the reanimated eyes that were given to him by Obito disappear right after his final death. At the end of the war, Kakashi forever loses his Sharingan and no longer lived up to his nickname— “Kakashi of the Sharingan.”
