The vast majority of sites are listing their top list of either the prettiest, sexiest or most popular anime girl in history. I understand there are a lot of guys who watch anime and want to see their waifus on these lists. But where is the love for male anime characters? Don’t worry senpai caters to the preference of all and will be listing his pick of the hottest male anime characters you wish were real.
I am the judge, jury and executioner of this list so not everyone will agree, but I picked only one character from a series. It’s to ensure diversity and give you more options for anime recommendations. Without further ado, this is BakaSenpai’s list of the hottest male anime characters that will make your boyfriend jealous.
BakaSenpai’s list of the hottest male anime characters
- Miyuki Shirogane
- Oreki Houtarou
- Shinya Kogami
- Sadao Maou
- Shoto Todoroki
- Karma Akabane
- Roy Mustang
- Giyu Tomioka
- Aslan Jade Calenreese/Ash
- Itachi Uchiha
- Spike Spiegel
- Lelouch Lamperouge
- Wilhelm Van Astrea
- Ken Kaneki
- Usui Takumi
- Levi Ackerman
Miyuki Shirogane (Kaguya Sama: Love is War)
Shirogane is the student council president of Shuchiin Academy. An attractive man with blond hair and piercing blue eyes. His blue eyes become more intense when he is sleep-deprived, and this feature is among the things caught the eye of Kaguya.
Miyuki is not a man of many talents. He is the definition of hard work. Even with an underprivileged background, Miyuki managed to claw his way up through the ranks of his school’s hierarchy system, which mostly comprises of wealthy students.
He is as a genius, but most aren’t aware of the hard work he puts behind his success. The reason he studies so diligently is that he can’t excel at anything else. Studies are the only thing that can make him stand on an equal footing to Kaguya.
Kaguya Sama is a hilarious romantic comedy that stands out in the genre. The slapstick humour and mind games will surely entertain anyone, especially when there’s a hot male anime character like Miyuki Shirogane in the lead.
“A love letter to Shinomiya? Some men are fools for love. We’re talking about Shinomiya who usually passes the time looking at me. Does this fellow know, next to me, any other male in the vicinity would only register as a talking weed?”
Oreki Houtarou (Hyouka)
Without taking a closer look, many would describe Houtarou as lazy, which is a very unattractive trait. Upon deep inspection, Houtarou is an intelligent boy who wishes to conserve his energy instead of wasting it on meaningless things. He has a wise approach towards his actions, but it can rub people off the wrong way. When he is passionate about something, Houtarou gives his all and ensures that the job done is nothing short of perfect. Unlike the previous character on this list, Oreki is born with talent but lacks hard work.
He has unruly short taupe-brown coloured hair, with bangs that reach just below his eyes. Houtarou’s eyes are asparagus-green. Usually, after waking up, Houtarou’s hair in the state of a mess. Because he does not show much emotion, he could be mistaken for being bored and apathetic. If he smiles though, he is undoubtedly one of the hottest male anime characters on this list.
Hyouka is an anime about a group of club members and their day to day life. However, it’s not as mundane as it seems as the group solve mysteries and unravel the truth behind them. There is also a slight touch of romance if that’s what you’re into, but it’s not the highlight of the show.
“If I don’t have to do it, I won’t. If I do have to do it, I’ll make it quick.”
Shinya Kogami (Psycho-Pass)
Kogami has grey eyes, short tousled dark brown hair and pale skin with a tall and muscular build. He usually wears a black suit and tie, as an Enforcer and an Inspector. When in the field, Kogami wears a grey coat over his suit.
Imagine living in a world where your mental state determines everything and your actions mean nothing. In the anime, the Sybil System governs the world, and the whole story follows a group of people questioning this systems judgement.
Kogami is the type of enforcer who will do whatever it takes to solve a case. The problem with his methods is that it goes against the system governing the world, but it gets the job done. If you love psychological thrillers with a hot lead who is intelligent, then the first season of Psycho-Pass is right up your alley.
“Being a detective isn’t about bringing someone down, but rather, protecting someone.”
Sadao Maou (The Devil Is a Part-Timer)
They say that power is attractive. There couldn’t be a more powerful man on this list. If you don’t know him, Maou would just come across as your average joe, but he is the Devil King who had to treat back to Earth after attempting war on Ente Isle.
On Earth, Maou assumes the life of everyday people and finds work to get by financially. He then finds a job a part-time job at MgRonalds where he is working hard to get promoted to full-time. Maou looks like an average Japanese, but that is only due to his human form. He can change into his demonic form, which isn’t the prettiest of sights but still attractive in its way.
The show is a slice of life of the Devil King trying to earn his promotion, but things that go quite as planned when the hero that banishes him appears. The hero is a woman by the name of Emilia, and her interactions with Maou is what keeps the show very comedic and entertaining.
“If you feel the ends justify the means, how does that make you different from us demons, exactly?”
Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)
Of all the male characters, Todoroki is by far one of the hottest (no pun intended). Todoroki is reasonably tall and quite lean for a man of his age. He has medium length hair, and wears bangs, parted twice as to not obscure his vision. His hair is evenly split between two colours: white on his right-side and crimson red on his left.
The bi-coloured nature of his hair is due to him inheriting his parent’s genetics evenly between his mother and father. Not only is he the hottest, but he is also one of the most naturally gifted among his peers. Even with all these privileges, Todoroki is humble and strives to surpass his capabilities. Although Todoroki is not the main character of the show, he is one of the most highlighted ones as he receives more screentime compared to the others. Yes, I’m talking to you, Mineta.
I don’t think My Hero Academia needs any introduction as it’s one of the mainstream anime out there. If you haven’t watched it, but if you’re into the shounen genre with generic tropes but execute them right, then My Hero Academia might be an enjoyable watch for you.
“If you wanna stop this, then stand up! Because I’ve just got one thing to say to you! Never forget who you want to become!”
Karma Akabane (Assassination Classroom)
Another redhead on this list. I guess red hair is an attractive feature on male anime characters. Karma Akabane is probably a fan-favourite character in the series. He is one of the most intelligent students in the whole school and is also the most handsome in his class. The reason why people don’t approach him is due to his mischievous nature that’s hiding behind his perfect smile.
Karma questions the true meaning of a teacher as he was betrayed once before by the teacher of whom he trusted. Because of this, he lost his respect for adults and has an aggressive tendency. He is a skilled fighter equipped with high intelligence which makes him no pushover.
Assassination Classroom is an anime about a class of students who are at the bottom of the food chain in their school in terms of grades. In their class, they learn how to kill their teacher, who is the most dangerous being on Earth with a speed of Mach 20. The show might seem funny and lighthearted on the outside, but there is a hidden depth to it. Some of its themes are about how to nurture people and bring out the best in them. It also touches on the importance of teaching and what it means to be a teacher. A lot of teachers nowadays don’t realize that their methods and ideology are what affects the cultivation of their students.
“Talented people often make the same mistake of thinking they have a talent for everything.”
Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Roy Mustang is the “Flame Alchemist,” having absolute control over heat and fire through alchemy. Using special gloves that create a spark when he snaps his fingers, Roy can create anything from a tiny ember to burn a letter, to a raging inferno that can destroy a humanoid body in seconds. Why do male anime characters that have the power of fire tend to be hot? (again no pun intended).
Roy Mustang is a man with an ideology. Naturally charismatic, the war hero will stop at nothing to realize his vision into reality. The good thing is, Roy’s beliefs align with the best interest of the people. Usually, it is hard for a man in a position of power to resist the temptation of corruption. To prevent this, Roy appoints Hawkeye as his right-hand woman to keep him in check and to kill him whenever he strays from his beliefs.
Roy views everything and everyone as a chess game. Always one step ahead, and always scheming to make sure he gets that checkmate in the end. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a very story-driven anime about two boys trying to recover their bodies after performing a forbidden ritual in the world of alchemy. It’s quite long, but there isn’t a point in the anime where it gets boring.
“My pawn, bishop, rook, my knight and even my queen has been taken. But I still haven’t been checkmated just yet.”
Giyu Tomioka (Demon Slayer)
Giyu is one of the demon slayers who are of the rank Hashira: the highest grade a person can achieve in the demon slayer corps. There are a lot of hot male anime characters in Demon Slayer, but I find Giyu to be the most attractive. I think it’s pretty understandable just by looking at him.
Giyu is a tall young man of a muscular stature and pale complexion, who is almost always seen wearing an unimpressed or emotionless expression. He has unruly black hair of uneven lengths that sticks up in tufts around his head, which he wears tied back in a low messy ponytail at the base of his neck.
Giyu doesn’t have much screen time in the anime, but he has a more prominent role in the manga. I find that the anime is better than the manga due to the way the studio handles the adaptation. The swordfights are beautifully animated, and it complements the glorious soundtrack. The three main protagonists each have an element of a shounen protagonist in them: the desire to protect other people, the need to be stronger and the will to overcome obstacles that are in the way of success.
“Fill your heart with anger. Strong, pure anger that gives no quarter. Anger that becomes the unwavering force that drives your limbs. Weakness and empty promises cannot protect your sister or find her a cure. And they certainly cannot avenge your family.”
Ash (Banana Fish)
At a glance, Ash is what many characters refer to in the manga as “beautiful,” with shaggy blond hair, pale green eyes, and a slender figure. However, his personality is much less graceful. He’s known for sporting a snarky attitude, recklessness, and seemingly cold ability to kill, landing him his fair share of enemies. At the same time, though, his intelligence and charismatic leadership win him an abundance of connections he is always happy to exploit. Special skills include good marksmanship, the ability to hack 80’s computers, and a sixth sense for being followed.
The anime is quite the controversy as it deals with themes like rape, drugs, prostitution and homosexuality. If you’re not into these kinds of things, then it’s best skipping the anime. I think its western nature offers something different than the average anime, but the story does follow a repetitive scheme of searching, kidnapping, and escaping. The characters are what keeps the story alive, and Ash is a capable protagonist which many people will adore.
“Aren’t there any decent parents in this world? It’s not like kids get to choose them at birth, you know. And they can’t exchange them if they turn out to be losers.”
Gin (Into the Forest of Fireflies Light)
Into the forest of fireflies light is an underrated anime movie with a runtime of only 40 minutes. The themes presented in this movie are similar to that of The Garden of Words. Gin, who is the main male character is a spirit that possesses green eyes, pale skin and silver hair. In the beginning, he wears a mask to hide his face, but as he grows comfortable with Hotaru, he starts taking it off.
The story is about a little girl who by chance encounters Gin, a spirit of the forest in Hotaru’s hometown. They start getting closer until Hotaru visits every time she’s back to her hometown during the school break. Each passing year, Hotaru grows older and meets Gin while transforming from a little girl to a high schooler. The catch to their visits is that for some reason, Hotaru isn’t allowed to touch Gin. It’s hard to explain why without spoiling, but do watch this beautiful movie. You might tear up in the end.
“I can’t wait for summer to come around. When I’m away from you even though I can’t be around crowds, I want to go see you.
Hei (Darker Than Black)
Darker Than Black is an underrated masterpiece. Two gates emerge out of nowhere: Hell and Heaven gate. The emergence of these gates gives birth to a group of people called Contractors. They’re people who have formed a contract to obtain a unique power, but every time they use their power, they have to give back in some shape or form. Think of it as the law of equivalent exchange from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Hei is a young man of slender build with black hair and dark blue eyes. When in his Li Shengshun persona, he wears the casual attire of an exchange student. When operating as a Contractor, he dons a bullet-proof trench coat and a white pierrot-inspired mask that fully conceals his face.
Hei is badass that’s also known as the Black Reaper. If that doesn’t entice you to watch the anime, then I don’t know what will.
“Do you think that someday, the real stars will ever come back?”
Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)
Naruto has a lot of hot male anime characters which made choosing the hottest among them hard. Minato, Kakashi, and Madara would have qualified in this list, but in the end, I opted for Itachi. I’m sure not many people will argue with my decision, although it was a bias one.
Itachi is one of the most popular but underrated character in Naruto. He usually ranks in the top ten of Shounen Jump magazine’s popularity poll. He first came out 11th place on the third character popularity poll and ever since then has been listed several times. In the final character poll, he was 5th place. It’s a no brainer and here’s why.
Itachi’s looks are without question far above average, but that is not why stands out among the rest. It’s what he’s been through and the worldview he adopts. Itachi is a genius and is the best of his generation. He is a pacifist by nature but will resort to violence when there aren’t any options left available.
When he was fourteen, Itachi slaughtered his family because it was the only way to save his younger brother and prevent another World War. He has more grounded motivations compared to other characters in Naruto: to keep his brother safe at all costs. It’s very relatable, and I think is why he appeals to a lot of fans. Itachi is also very wise and would have been a great candidate for Hokage.
There’s a lot that can be learned from Itachi’s character which is a good reason to watch Naruto if you were hesitant before.
“You and I are flesh and blood. I’m always going to be there for you, even if it’s only as an obstacle for you to overcome. Even if you do hate me, that’s what big brothers are for.”
Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)
Spike is an interesting character who is the main protagonist of Cowboy Bebop. Planet Earth has become uninhabitable, which led to the colonization of other planets and moons. The year is 2071, and the Inter Solar System Police is not enough to keep the peace in the galaxy. That’s where Spike and his group come in. They’re bounty hunters who help aid the police in catching wanted criminals for some coin of course. The anime is episodic but has an overarching theme that resolves by the end. If you’re into Sci-Fi, and bounty hunting then this is a show for you. It’s similar to the new western series ‘The Mandolorian’.
Spike is tall and lean with dashing good looks but is troubled by the past. He has an artificial right eye which he mentions is looking into the ghosts of his past. His eyes symbolize his fears: the artificial eye looking into the past while his right eye looks into the present. What’s haunting us isn’t our past, but our mindset that allows it.
“I’m not going there to die. I’m going to find out if I’m really alive.”
Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
According to MAL,
In the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia is establishing itself as a dominant military nation, starting with the conquest of Japan. Renamed to Area 11 after its swift defeat, Japan has seen significant resistance against these tyrants in an attempt to regain independence.
Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian student, unfortunately, finds himself caught in a crossfire between the Britannian and the Area 11 rebel armed forces. He can escape, however, thanks to the timely appearance of a mysterious girl named C.C., who bestows upon him Geass, the “Power of Kings.” Realizing the vast potential of his newfound “power of absolute obedience,” Lelouch embarks upon a perilous journey as the masked vigilante known as Zero, leading a merciless onslaught against Britannia to get revenge once and for all.
Lelouch usually comes into comparison with Yagami Light in Death Note. They’re both geniuses that obtain a unique power that helps them achieve their goal be it good or evil. What’s worth mentioning isn’t the unique abilities given to them, but how these smart characters utilize them. Lelouch is a prince who manages to masquerade around as Zero, a masked terrorist and leader of the Rebellion against the Britannia Empire to destroy its legacy.
“What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil? Or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?”
Wilhelm Van Astrea (Re:Zero)
No list is complete if we don’t mention a character that is elderly, especially one that ages like fine wine. One of the hottest male anime characters that are old is Wilhelm van Astrea. Even when he was younger, Wilhelm was very good looking.
Wilhelm van Astrea is a member of the Crusch Camp and is Thearesia van Astrea’s husband. Without spoiling the anime, the only thing worth mentioning on Wilhelm is that he’s a badass who is a master of the sword.
“Cling greedily to the victory you have within your sight. If you can still stand if your fingers still move if all your teeth have not broken, stand and fight.”
Ken Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul)
Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless city—a place where vicious creatures called “ghouls” exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.
Kaneki is proof that nerds can be hot too. Well, he was a nerd before becoming a ghoul at least. Kaneki was a student who studied Japanese literature at Kamii Univesity, living a relatively average life. One day, his encounter with a female ghoul under the name of Kamishiro Rize forces him to undergo emergency surgery procedures after his assault by her. The surgery shifts Kaneki’s life upside down as he transforms into a half-ghoul.
The premise and characters sound intriguing, but I recommend reading the manga instead of watching the anime. The anime adaptation doesn’t do the manga justice and even made a non-canonical sequel which was horrible. The only reason someone would watch the anime is to admire Kaneki’s visuals as one of the hottest male anime characters on this list.
Don’t know what makes an anime canon or non-canon? I briefly explain it here.
“It’s not the world that’s messed up; it’s those of us in it. Yes, some ghouls walk a path that leaves sorrow in their wake, but just like humans, we can choose a different path altogether. We have a lot to learn, both your kind and mine. We need to stop fighting and start talking. Because when it comes to the state of the world, you can’t point your finger at ghouls or humans. We’re all to blame.”
Tomoe (Kamisama Kiss)
If you’re looking for a lighthearted shoujo anime with romance in it, then Kamisama Kiss might be right up your alley. The story centres around Nanami who is homeless but somehow ends up taking over a rundown shrine as its new god. Nanami is accompanied by her spirit familiars, and her interactions with them are what makes the anime fun and entertaining. All you have to do is just sit back and relax.
Tomoe is one of the spirit familiars that serve Nanami. His over-the-top good looks earn him a bevvy of admirers wherever he goes. He is the main love interest of Nanami. The best part about this show is that there aren’t any love triangles that will interfere with the relationship between Nanami and Tomoe.
Kamisama Kiss has a very cute opening theme. If you want to know more underrated anime themes that you can find out here.
“If you could do everything by yourself, I wouldn’t have a reason to exist.”
Usui Takumi (Kaichou Wa Maid Sama)
I’ll never forget this show. Kaichou Wa Maid Sama is an anime that I wish would get a season 2. It’s one of the best romantic comedies out there. The story follows Misaki, who comes from a low-income household and is wary of men due to her father abandoning her.
Misaki becomes the student council president of her high school but is keeping a secret: her part-time job as a waitress in a maid cafe. One day, Usui Takumi finds out her secret and their love/hate relationship blossoms from there.
Usui is one of the hottest male anime characters on this list. He is a jack of all trades and a master of everything. He is a bit of a mystery, and the anime doesn’t reveal much. I highly recommend reading the manga to find out more on Usui’s background and the conclusion to this tale.
“No matter what kind of path I choose, if some sort of sacrifice must be made, it is only Ayuzawa who I will not sacrifice. Because I think if I am with Ayuzawa, I can overcome anything.’’
Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Attack on Titan: the most popular anime right now. I think its popularity is justified by the story and the characters of the show. One character, in particular, is Levi Ackerman.
Levi is the most skilled soldier in the whole show. Nothing is more cathartic than watching Levi swing in the air like spider-man while slashing some titans. He gets even hotter when he’s angry.
“I don’t know which option you should choose. I could never advise you on that. No matter what kind of wisdom dictates you the option you pick, no one will be able to tell if it’s right or wrong until you arrive at some sort of outcome from your choice.“
Hottest male anime characters can’t all be humans, right? That’s why I’ve included the furry wolf Legoshi. He’s a soft-spoken, humble, and polite grey wolf with a kind heart and gentle personality which contrasts his frightening yet attractive appearance
Beastars is about a society of animals that have been segregated by their choice of food: herbivore, carnivores and omnivores. It creates a divide between the animals as herbivores are afraid to mingle with carnivores, and omnivores due to their fear of being eaten. Legoshi is a wolf that’s trying to learn more about himself and embracing the parts he has been suppressing his whole life.
Beastars is a rather new anime which is growing in popularity. Fans are usually sceptical of CGI, but the show has put it to good use. You can watch it on Netflix.
“I’m used to suppressing my feelings. I even learned how to fake a smile.”
And it’s a wrap! That’s BakaSenpai’s list of the hottest male anime characters. Leave a comment on what you think of the list. Would you have changed anything?
